After nearly seven years of development, the long-awaited sequel to the platforming metroidvania Hollow Knight was released. The game follows Hornet, a Spider, after she is kidnapped by bugs from the citadel. The game focuses on tight and precise platforming with close combat fighting that, in many ways, is more intense than the original game.
The hand-drawn art style is absolutely breathtaking, with me catching myself setting down the controller to just take in the beautiful environment. The seven-year development time clearly paid off, as the whole game is a gorgeous artpiece that is a major improvement over the original game.
Since the release of Hollow Knight, many fans have raved about the original game’s score; however, Silksong surpasses the original score with calm ambient music that plays while the player explores the lush caves and open fields of the game world, and with intense, violent music played during the boss fights, Silksong delivers a beautiful soundtrack.
Lastly, the gameplay, if Hollow Knight is known for anything, it’s extremely difficult combat. Silksong continues this theme with bulky and difficult bosses, to even small enemies giving me a hard time hours in. This is a good thing. The game is extremely difficult, don’t get me wrong, and that can make it extremely frustrating, but the feeling of defeating a boss you never thought you could beat is extremely rewarding.
In conclusion, Silksong is a beautiful game, with a meticulously hand-drawn art style that is a treat for the eyes. A unique soundtrack with beautiful sounds and themes. And a difficult combat system that will test the player. Hollow Knight: Silksong is more than a game; it’s an experience, and for the low price of 20 dollars, I can’t not give Silksong a 10/10.
