With the new school year, a new attendance policy has also come with it. At Franklin, attendance has become a big problem. So in an attempt to get students in their seats, the school corporation has announced the new school policy to coincide with a new law from the Indiana State Government.
How many absences allotted
Students are not allowed to be absent from any class for over ten times per semester.
These ten days include both excused and unexcused absences.
Consequences
If a student is starting or is failing a class due to absences, they will be taken out of the class and marked with a W/F(Withdrawal Failing), and will be placed in a new class for the remainder of the semester. If a student struggles with attendance extensively, this could lead to more consequences such as:
● Loss of driving and/or parking privileges
● Loss of prom/dance eligibility
● Loss of participation in extracurricular activities
● Ineligibility to earn credit
● Detention, suspension, expulsion
● Potential legal action under Indiana’s Compulsory Attendance Law (I.C. 20-33-2)
Athletics and extracurricular
If you are a student athlete, or involved in extracurricular activities, you must be in the building and checked in by 9:30 a.m., if not present in school by the designated time, you will be unable to participate in any practice, or compete in a game or match.
What you should do if absent
In the case that you are absent from school, this is what you need to do: have your parents reach out to the attendance office at (317-346-8007) to inform the school of your absence. In the event that a student needs to leave early, please call an hour early to the student’s intended dismissal time. For parents that are picking up a student before school is over, it is mandatory that you bring a photo ID.
