The newest addition to the collection of clubs at the high school is “Ethics Bowl”. Ethics Bowl is a club which focuses on productive conversation surrounding ethical and moral dilemmas. The team has been practicing once to twice a week since September, and is preparing for competition at the end of this month. The team has spent their time analyzing 15 cases provided by the National High School Ethics Bowl association. These cases use narrative framing to hold ethical and moral issues. These issues are to be discussed by two teams in a series of 3 rounds, in which they make and respond to the other team’s comments.
The objective of this competition is NOT to debate. This is precisely what separates Ethics Bowl from things like debate club or model government. The objective is to, instead of proving one’s argument to be better, improve the general conversation around the issue at hand. Teams are awarded the win based on how well they contribute to the conversation, how well they push the conversation, and how gracious they are towards the opposition.
The competition will take place Jan. 31st at DePauw University. It will be an all day event where the team will hope to move on to the next round of competition taking place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
