The choir department’s auditions for the 2026-2027 school year will be held in 2 weeks, March 23rd-25th. The choirs perform and compete various times throughout the school year, perfecting their choral technique, and doing it together. Interested in being a part of it all? Here’s what you can do:
1. Know what choirs you’re qualified for
Our school has 7 choirs total, 4 concert choirs and 3 show choirs. What’s the difference?
Concert choir is standing and singing, learning more complex music, often in other languages. We have 4 concert choirs: Voce Alta (beginner treble choir), Dynamic (beginner tenor/bass choir), Bella Voce (varsity treble choir), and Signature Sound (varsity mixed choir). If you’re new to the department, you’ll only be eligible for certain ensembles. Female voice parts can audition for Voce Alta and Bella Voce. Male voice parts can audition for Dynamic and Signature Sound. Concert choir is a great choice for those who would like to be a part of choir with a small time commitment! Performances include concerts, some competitions (varsity only), Christmas gigs (varsity only), and the ISSMA competition. (Note: Varsity concert choirs have a $100 fee.)

Show choir is dancing and singing, where the vocal parts tend to be easier, but it’s more focused on clean dancing and having strong stamina to perform choreography and vocals. We have 3 show choirs: Legacy (JV treble choir), Sensations (varsity treble choir), and Heritage Singers (varsity mixed choir). New to choir? Female voice parts can audition for Legacy and Sensations (NOTE: Incoming freshmen are not eligible for Sensations.) Male voice parts can audition for Heritage Singers. Varsity show choirs (Heritage & Sensations) have a sport-level schedule, with rehearsals twice a week from November-March, and competitions are some Saturdays between January and March. Legacy rehearses approximately once a month from November-March, with some Saturday competitions as well. There are other performances, like concerts, Christmas gigs (varsity only), and combining with concert choir for ISSMA. (Note: JV show choir has a $425 fee, and varsity show choirs have a $900-$1,000 fee.)

2. Contact Kelly Day or Johnnie Hughes for information
If you’re interested in auditioning, you can email either director, Kelly Day or Johnnie Hughes. However, it’s best to email the director that leads the choir you’re interested in. Mrs. Day leads Sensations, Bella Voce, and Voce Alta. Mr. Hughes leads Heritage Singers, Signature Sound, Legacy, and Dynamic. Please let them know if you’re interested in auditioning, and they can give you information about auditions, performances, incentives, and more. Make sure you schedule a time for your vocal audition!
3. Pick up audition music from the choir room
If you’re auditioning for next year, you can pick up the sheet music of the audition song in the choir room (A111). It’s okay if you can’t read sheet music–just listen to the song and the directors will guide you through the audition. The sheet music is available as of March 11, so grab your music when you can or ask a choir friend to grab you a copy.
4. Attend rehearsals & performances
The best way to be prepared to join choir is to attend our concerts and performances! If you’re auditioning for a varsity level show choir, you’re encouraged to attend a rehearsal to see how the rehearsal process works. Our spring concert will be May 7 at 7pm; make sure to show up and support, as our concerts are the best way to see all our choirs!
5. Audition!!
The most important part: your audition! Show up to the choir room for your audition with your music and a good attitude. The directors will have you sing through the audition piece and likely ask some questions to get to know you. Just do your best! It is a very laid back environment. Once you’ve auditioned, the directors will let you know what choirs you’re in before spring break.
6. Make sure you go to BOTH of the show choir auditions
The directors hold two auditions for choir: your vocal audition and your dance audition. The vocal audition can be scheduled whenever is the most convenient for you and the directors. The dance audition is a mass audition held on Wednesday, March 25. The directors will teach some short choreography and have you perform it in small groups. Don’t worry if you mess up–the directors just want to see your effort. Don’t miss this audition as it’s essential for show choir. (Note: if you are only auditioning for concert choir, you don’t have to attend the dance audition.)
Choir is an exciting activity with so many great opportunities! They’d love to have you as a part of the department, so please consider auditioning for choir for the 26-27 school year!
